Councillor David Smyth was Mayor of Ards from 2010-2011). He was Deputy Mayor in 2009-2010 and also previously held the position of First Citizen in 1992-1993.

First elected to the Council in 1985, he is a member of the Ulster Unionist Party and has been an elected representative continuously for the last 25 years. He followed in his father's footsteps who was also a councillor in the old Newtownards Borough Council in the late 1930s and 1940s.

Councillor Smyth's family has a long and proud association with the Ards Borough, having been residents in the town of Newtownards for at least 170 years and until 1999, Councillor Smyth ran the family butchers business in the town's Regent Street - the premises were originally bought by the family in the 1850s from the Londonderry Estate.

While he has a wide range of interests, he is particularly involved in economic development issues and was a founder member and former chairman of the local enterprise agency, Ards Business Centre. He is also a past chairman of the Ards Community Safety Partnership, a position he held for the 5 years.

He is also a member of the Ulster Wildlife Trust and attends the Methodist Church.

Councillor Smyth is married to Hazel and has two grown-up daughters and two grandchildren.
