Alderman Gibson has been a councillor since 1985 and was Mayor in both 1990 and 1996. He is the current Chair of the Ards District Policing Partnership and is a past Chairman of the South Eastern Education and Library Board, having served on the Board for 16 years. Formerly a farmer, Alderman Gibson is now a case worker in the DUP Constituency Office. He also serves on the Board of Governors of his local primary school in Ballygowan and Nendrum College, Comber. He is a keen sports fan particularly of football, cricket and bowls.
