RECYCLING

While Ards successfully met its first big recycling target - to recycle 25% of household waste by the end of 2005 - with ever tougher targets to meet and rising landfill costs, the introduction and development of recycling schemes and increasing the accessibility of recycling options for local people are becoming increasingly important aspects of the Council's work.

In June 2008, in a bid to encourage more households to recycle and to meet the new 40% target for diverting waste from landfill, the Council began an 'alternate weekly collection' system, meaning grey bins are collected one week and blue bins are collected the next. Brown bins are also collected on a fortnightly basis (collection timetables are available for download below) and from April 2009, food waste can also be recycled through the brown bins.

As well as the two Kerbside Recycling Schemes - blue bins for dry recyclables (paper, plastic bottles, tins and so on) and brown bins for food and garden waste, we continue to provide extensive facilities at our 7 Waste Recycling Centres for recycling a range of materials.

In 2007 Ards also added more than 20 additional recycling banks - or 'bring sites' - for glass.

The additional facilities have been placed at convenient spots in towns and villages, helping to make glass recycling more accessible right across the Borough.

The bottle banks are in:

o Ballygowan - car park at the rear of the Roundabout Bar

o Ballywalter - Harbour car park

o Ballyhalbert - Centra car park, High Street

o Comber - Park Way, beside pavilion

o Donaghadee - car parks at the Rugby Club and Crommelin Park

o Killinchy - beside the community centre

o Kircubbin - community centre and Saltwater Brig car park

o Loughries Evangelical Church car park

o Newtownards - West Winds Community Centre, Ards Rugby Club Car Park and the Spar, Donaghadee Road

o Portavogie - Anchor car park and car park at the community centre

o Portaferry - car park at Cloughey Road sports fields
