RECORD JUMP IN DOG LICENCES IN ARDS

Ards has witnessed a record jump in the number of dogs licensed in the area, according to figures released by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Licensing of dogs saw a jump of 24% in 2008, when Ards Borough Council issued 7,331 licences, compared with 5,897 licences in 2007. The figures show that this is the 2nd highest increase in Northern Ireland and that only two other council areas - Belfast and Lisburn - have more licensed dogs.

"Ards has always had a large number of dogs in terms of its population, which partly accounts for the fact that we issue a high number of licences. However, our work on dog control issues, specifically educating local people about the need and importance of licensing their dogs and increasing the methods and ease with which people can obtain a licence have undoubtedly made a significant difference to the numbers in Ards," said Richard Brittain, Borough Inspector with the Council.

Dog licences can be obtained in person at the Council offices, 2 Church Street, Newtownards, by post, by phone on 028 9182 4005, and on-line at www.ards-council.gov.uk. Anyone who would like further information on dog licensing or dog control in general, should contact the Borough Inspector's Office, Ards Borough Council, Tel: 028 9182 4005.
