PORTAFERRY B&B WINS ACCESS AWARD

A fresh approach to holiday options for the disabled and their family and friends has received a national award for its accessibility and practicality.

Strangford Bay Lodge, nestled on the shores of Strangford Bay and a short distance from Portaferry, won the 'Prestige Access Award' at the annual William Keown Trust awards, which recognise those individuals and organisations which make the built and open environment accessible to all.

The Trust's judging panel considered the design, internal and external layout of the bed and breakfast and self-catering accommodation to be well above the normal standards expected and praised the dedication and vision of owner, Paul Toner:

"To receive this award from such a respected organisation as the William Keown Trust is a great boost in my first year. I have been very busy and delighted by the way the building has worked well for the many various needs of my guests," said Mr Toner.

Congratulating Mr Toner, Sharon Mahaffy, Tourism Development Officer with Ards Borough Council, said:

"Accessibility is becoming an increasingly important issue for everyone involved in the tourism and hospitality industry and Paul's work to make the Strangford Bay Lodge so accessible deserves to be recognised. We're delighted that he has been honoured in this way".
