Leisure Ards currently comprises of a range of indoor and outdoor leisure facilities and offers a wide and comprehensive programme of activities which are updated on a regular basis to meet these changing needs and expectations.

Purpose of the post:

The postholder will be expected to undertake a wide range of duties across the facilities which together will ensure that a high quality leisure experience is offered to our customers.

The main duties will include general supervision of the facilities, acting as fitness consultant, delivering coaching services, reception duties, erection and dismantling of equipment and general housekeeping tasks.

Job Description

Principal Duties and Tasks

1. Perform any duties which ensure that the programme of activities within the Centre operates smoothly, efficiently and safely and in the best interests of the user.

2. Perform all duties in a manner which ensures that a high standard of customer care is achieved at all times.

3. Supervise all indoor and outdoor areas as required to ensure that the facilities operate safely and efficiently.

4. Directly participate in the delivery of the Centre's activities as and where required and appropriate to the individual's training and qualifications.

5. Undertake administration duties and cash handling duties associated with the post.

6. Perform all duties in accordance with the agreed policies and operating procedures for the Centre.

7. Undertake any duties required to ensure that the highest possible level of cleanliness is maintained throughout the facilities at all times.

8. Undertake any training that is required to ensure that a high level of service delivery is maintained at all times.

9. Actively promote the centre and all its services in a positive manner at all times.

10. Respond to change in trends and practices within the industry to ensure that the expectations of the customer are fulfilled and their experiences positive.

11. Assist with the maintenance of any applicable quality awards.

12. Ensure compliance with the Council's policies and procedures, relevant legislation and Health and Safety guidelines.

13. Any other duties as may be allocated and appropriate to the post's grade, including interchange of duties to cover for leave, sickness, employee vacancies etc. and working within other sections of the Leisure Services Department or the Council.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Applicants must be physically fit and must be prepared to work on a rota system which includes days, evenings, weekends (Sat & Sun) and public holidays. Applicants must be consent to a pre employment check with Police / Social Services.

It is essential that applicants hold a minimum of three of the skills outlined below - these may vary according to the skills needed at the time of advertisement & will be subject to the needs of the service.

• Previous experience in the leisure industry

• Hold a recognised lifesaving qualification e.g. RLSS Bronze Medallion or above or a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification.

• Hold a recognised First Aid qualification

• Hold a customer care or Welcome Host certificate

• Hold a recognised qualification in Fitness i.e. NIIC, BAWLA, GNVQ II, Premier, qualification in Sports Science or GAYTON or equivalent qualification

• Hold a recognised academic qualification associated with the leisure industry

• Hold a recognised qualification in IT e.g. CLAIT II or ECDL

• Previous experience of reception duties within a similar environment

• Recognised sports specific coaching qualification

If difficulties are experienced recruiting skilled Leisure and Fitness Associates*, applicants who do not hold any of the skills may be considered for appointment on a Trainee basis.

Conditions of Appointment

General

The general terms and conditions of employment applying to this post are generally those recommended by the National Joint Council for Local Government Services as amended by Ards Borough Council from time to time. Part 3 of the green book (other national provisions) states that enhanced rates be paid for weekend, evening and shift working unless modified by local agreement. This has been previously varied by local arrangement which was effective from 1 September 1997.

Hours of Duty

There are no guaranteed hours for this position. The number of hours you will be required to work depends on the Council's requirements and your availability.

Pay rate

The pay rate for the post is £15,153 - £16,217 pro rata per annum depending on skills levels. Wages will be paid weekly directly to the employees' bank or building society account through the Bankers Automated Clearing System.

Pension

The successful applicant will be eligible for membership of the Northern Ireland Local Government Officers Superannuation Scheme. Membership of the scheme is optional. The employees' contribution is equal to 6% of salary.
