EQUALITY

Section 75 and Schedule 9 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 places a statutory obligation on Public Authorities to carry out all their functions with due regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity and have regard to the desirability of promoting good relations.

To implement this obligation the Council produced an Equality Scheme which was approved by the Equality Commission in July 2000. This scheme outlines a plan for ensuring that consideration of equality issues is central to policy formulation and decision-making within the Council.

In order to help achieve its statutory obligation, the Council will, as appropriate, undertake screening, carry out equality impact assessments and monitor policies to establish their impact on the promotion of equality of opportunity and good relations.

Current Consultation
The Council is currently consulting on its Draft Equality Action Plan 2010-2011 and the policies screened to August 2009.
